What to Look For When Buying a Lash Extension Adhesive
Not all lash glues are equal. Here are the factors every lash artist and brand should evaluate — from retention and drying time to ingredients and regulatory compliance.

The adhesive is the single most important product in a lash artist’s kit. It determines retention, comfort, safety and, ultimately, client satisfaction and rebooking. Yet lash glue is also the product most often chosen on price or marketing claims alone. This guide breaks down what actually matters when buying a lash extension adhesive, so you can make an informed, professional decision.
1. Retention and bonding strength
Retention is the headline metric — how long extensions stay attached. A quality adhesive should deliver reliable retention across the natural lash growth cycle, typically five to seven weeks. Look for consistent, repeatable results rather than one-off claims. Retention is also affected by application technique, environment and aftercare, so a stable, well-formulated adhesive gives you the controllable foundation you need.
2. Drying (curing) time
Drying time affects both speed and control. Fast-drying adhesives (around 0.5 to 1 second) suit experienced artists working quickly, while slightly slower-setting formulas (1 to 2 seconds) give newer artists more time to position each extension. Match the adhesive to your skill level and working speed rather than assuming the fastest option is best.
3. Viscosity
Viscosity — how thick or thin the adhesive is — influences how it flows and how much you pick up on each dip. A thinner adhesive tends to cure faster and suits classic sets, while a slightly thicker adhesive can offer more control for volume work. The right viscosity depends on your technique and the sets you specialise in.
4. Ingredients and formulation
Professional lash adhesives are cyanoacrylate-based. What matters is the quality and purity of that formulation. Look for adhesives that are hydroquinone-free and free from unregulated ingredients, and be cautious of products that do not disclose their formulation clearly. A reputable manufacturer will be transparent about what is — and is not — in the bottle.
- Cyanoacrylate-based for professional performance.
- Hydroquinone-free and free from unregulated ingredients.
- Low-fume and low-irritant options for sensitive clients.
- Clear disclosure of formulation and intended use.
5. Regulatory compliance and safety documentation
This is where many cheap adhesives fall short. A cosmetic adhesive used around the eye must comply with the relevant regulations for your market — EU Cosmetic Regulation 1223/2009, UK Cosmetic Directives, and FDA MOCRA in the USA. It should also come with a safety data sheet (SDS). If a supplier cannot provide compliance information and an SDS, that is a serious red flag for both safety and your professional liability.
Always ask for a safety data sheet and proof of cosmetic compliance before buying. A trustworthy manufacturer will provide both without hesitation.
6. Consistency, storage and shelf life
Batch-to-batch consistency is essential; your results should not change every time you reorder. Check the recommended storage conditions and shelf life, and buy from a manufacturer with proper quality control. Adhesive that has been stored poorly or is past its best will let you down mid-appointment.
