Understanding what it is and how it behaves is not academic — it is the foundation of safe practice, informed client conversations and confident product choices. This article explains cyanoacrylate in plain terms, along with the safety considerations every lash professional and brand should know.
What is cyanoacrylate?
Cyanoacrylate is a family of fast-bonding adhesives — the same chemistry found in familiar "super glue", but formulated to a very different, cosmetic-grade standard for use near the eye. In lash adhesives, it is refined and combined with other components to control drying time, viscosity, flexibility and colour. It cures (hardens) by reacting with moisture, which is why humidity has such a strong effect on how it performs.
How it bonds
When adhesive meets the moisture present in the air and on the natural lash, a rapid chemical reaction called polymerisation occurs, forming a strong, flexible bond between the extension and the natural lash. This is why controlling humidity and using the right amount of product matters so much — the reaction is driven by moisture, not by pressure or heat.
The main safety considerations
- Fumes — curing cyanoacrylate releases vapours that can irritate eyes and airways, so good ventilation is essential.
- Skin and eye contact — the adhesive should never touch the skin or eye directly; it bonds to the extension near, but not on, the skin.
- Sensitivity and allergy — a minority of people react to cyanoacrylate, which is why patch testing is important.
- Heat generation — cyanoacrylate can generate heat as it cures rapidly, another reason to use the correct amount.
Understanding sensitivities and allergies
It is important to distinguish irritation from a true allergy. Irritation is usually short-lived and often linked to fumes or technique. A genuine cyanoacrylate allergy is an immune response that can develop over time, even in clients who previously had no issue, and it will not resolve by switching technique. Any client showing signs of an allergic reaction should stop treatment and seek medical advice. Low-fume, well-formulated adhesives reduce irritation but cannot eliminate a true allergy.
A patch test before a first appointment is best practice. It does not guarantee against future sensitisation, but it identifies existing sensitivities and demonstrates professional duty of care.
Safe handling and storage
Work in a well-ventilated space, keep adhesive off the skin, close bottles immediately after use, and store as the manufacturer directs — typically cool, dark and airtight. Always keep the safety data sheet accessible; it details safe handling, first aid and storage for your specific product. Treating adhesive with the same care as any professional chemical protects you and your clients.
Why formulation quality matters
Not all cyanoacrylate adhesives are equal. Quality depends on the purity of the raw materials, the precision of the formulation and the standards of the manufacturing facility. A cosmetic-grade adhesive made in a regulated facility, free from unregulated additives and supplied with full safety documentation, is fundamentally different from an unregulated import — even though both are "cyanoacrylate".
